Daren, 43 Years Old, Regent Square, PA
Daren, an experienced racer, sustained a concussion during a vintage car race in July of 2014. During the race through Oakland, his car spun into a telephone pole leaving Daren with four broken ribs, and concussion symptoms of fogginess, headaches, vision troubles, vertigo, and mood changes. After visiting the emergency room, Daren made an appointment at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program based on a recommendation from his sister-in-law. Daren’s nephew was currently being treated for his concussion at UPMC.
Within a week of his accident, Daren was evaluated by Micky Collins, PhD, and the concussion team at UPMC. Daren learned his path to recovery would involve physical therapy, vision therapy, and half days at work because his regular responsibilities worsened his symptoms. His vision troubles and vertigo were interfering with his ability to work, so therapy exercises to make daily tasks like looking at a computer screen easier were part of his rehabilitation. Thanks to his hard work, honesty with the concussion team, and the knowledge he gained about concussion, Daren was able to return to a regular work schedule in October of 2014. After a final evaluation, including an interview with Daren’s wife, Holly, to get a full report on his health, Dr. Collins cleared Daren to return to racing.
