Walter’s treatment approach was customized to his injury and goals for recovery.

Evaluation and Assessment

Dr. Michael “Micky” Collins, PhD assessed Walter’s concussion injury during his first appointment at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Dr. Collins observed Walter’s response to:

  • Basic exercises
  • Motor movements
  • Reflex tests

Vestibular Therapy

Dr. Anne Mucha, DPT administered Walter’s vestibular therapy during his concussion treatment at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Walter’s specific vestibular therapy consisted of:

  • Various eye examinations
  • Assessment of eye function and ability
  • Gaze stabilization exercises

Exertion Therapy

Sarah Ostop, a physical therapist, provided Walter with a comprehensive exercise regimen for his concussion management to help improve brain function. Walter’s exertion therapy focused on the areas of:

  • Cardio and endurance
  • Core exercises and strength training
  • Agility
  • Flexibility

Planning and Logistics

Gulin Bulbuloglu, a global care liason for international patients, worked closely with Walter to ensure he was comfortable while traveling from Toronto, Ontario to Pittsburgh, PA for his concussion treatment. More specifically, Gulin worked with Walter to:

  • Coordinate his appointments and visits with the concussion experts
  • Keep him informed with important updates
  • Provide lodging information and tourism activities while visiting Pittsburgh
