Luke, a high school basketball player, sustained a concussion during a game in January 2015. After a collision on the court, Luke blacked out momentarily then pulled himself out of the game.

That night Luke’s mom, Paula, made an appointment with the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program at the recommendation of his team’s trainer. Over the next few days, Luke experienced the following symptoms of concussion:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Balance troubles
  • Difficulty reading and concentrating

Concussion Assessment

At his first appointment with the concussion team, Luke underwent a full evaluation including ImPACT® testing. Because he had baseline data available, the concussion team was able to compare his post-injury results to his normal abilities.

Managing the Concussion

Based on Luke’s test results and symptoms, the concussion team developed a rehabilitation plan that included taking a break from basketball to focus on vestibular, vision, and exertion therapy. In addition to weekly therapy, Luke received some extra time on tests and other classroom accommodations.

The academic support gave Luke peace of mind and created a less stressful school environment as he recovered. “My grades went up, I was able to maintain much better relationships, and this experience gave me time to try new activities outside of sports,” Luke shares.

Concussion Recovery

After five weeks of therapy, Luke was cleared by the concussion team to return to sports and school without accommodations in March 2015.
