In a December 2013, Breanne was involved in a car accident. Her tires slid on a patch of black ice, causing her to hit a tree and totaling her car.

Concussion Symptoms

After a few days of rest, Breanne wasn’t feeling quite like herself. She experienced the following symptoms of a concussion:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Dizziness
  • Migraines
  • Blurred vision
  • Exhaustion

Breanne followed up with her pediatrician a few days after the accident. Her doctor gave her an ImPACT® test and referred her to the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

At Breanne’s first appointment in late January 2014, she retook the ImPACT® test, finding her scores had gotten worse. After a symptom assessment and a discussion of her test results and overall health, the concussion team worked to develop a rehabilitation plan tailored for Breanne.

Managing the Concussion

At this point, due to her persisting symptoms and various recommendations, she had missed nearly a full month of school.

With her time out of the classroom, Breanne worked on vestibular and vision therapy. In addition to regular checkups and therapy appointments, she began to wear anti-fatigue glasses and take medication.

“The exercises and activities surprised me at first, but they ended up helping me get better,” Breanne recalls.

Concussion Challenges

Breanne’s progress was slow but steady. In the fall of 2014, she began her first semester of college, pursuing a pre-medicine course of study. Throughout it all, Breanne and her mother Kelly were determined Breanne would recover.

“We never thought it would take so long. Sometimes we felt helpless and hopeless, but they helped us through this time,” Kelly shares.
