Victoria, 16 Years Old, Whitehall, PA

Victoria, a junior in high school, sustained a concussion during a collision at cheerleading practice. In the days that followed, she experienced a bloody nose, headaches, confusion, vision troubles, and light sensitivity. victoriaAfter visiting her pediatrician, Victoria was referred to the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Victoria’s older sister had sustained a concussion in the past so their mother, Carla, was eager to have Victoria evaluated.

At her initial appointment with Micky Collins, PhD, and the concussion team, Victoria underwent testing to identify the scope of her injury. Dr. Collins prescribed a round of vestibular therapy that would emphasize visual exercises to treat Victoria’s vision troubles. The concussion team also prescribed physical therapy to help with the symptoms that would be aggravated by a return to cheerleading.

After weeks of hard work and dedication to her therapy plan, Victoria felt like herself again and was cleared to return to cheering at games.
