Maddie, 14 years old, Basking Ridge, NJ
After her third concussion, Maddie was told she should never play soccer again. Looking for a second opinion, her family did some research and traveled from Basking Ridge, NJ, to see Micky Collins, PhD, and his team at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.
Previously, Maddie’s treatment plans included refraining from all physical activity and most social and extracurricular activities. For Maddie, Dr. Collins felt this approach had negatively impacted her recovery. The UPMC team developed an individualized rehabilitation program that included vestibular exercises and light physical activity. Within a few weeks, Maddie was back to excelling in her life as a normal, happy teenager and student athlete.
About a year later, at the beginning of her freshmen soccer season, Maddie sustained another concussion in a car accident. Her family immediately brought her back to UPMC and Dr. Collins following the car accident. The team again developed a personalized rehabilitation plan that included physical exercise. By following the protocols and plan set by the UPMC team, Maddie was feeling better within a few weeks and got back to school and the soccer field faster than she expected.
“Dr. Collins not only understands his patients, he cares about them deeply and does everything in his power to help them. He has assembled an outstanding team to assist him and they are exceptional at what they do. They treated us like family.” –Scott, Maddie’s father
